Discovery Afternoons
Discovery Afternoons are a fundamental part of The Conyers Experience and form part of the Personal Development Curriculum. The Discovery Afternoon programme is designed to give students the opportunity to:
- Deepen their understanding of topics covered during Discovery Hour (including Fundamental British Values)
- Experience new opportunities, both within and outside of the classroom, through practical activities and off-site visits
- Develop the interpersonal skills necessary to become well-rounded individuals.
There are four Discovery Afternoons across each academic year. Students are expected to engage fully with this compulsory element of the Conyers Personal Development Curriculum.
As part of the Discovery curriculum, there are two full day trips offered: Beamish for Year 7 on Discovery Afternoon 1 and outward bounds trips to Air Trail and Moor House for Year 9 on Discovery Afternoon 4. The Year 9 trip is optional and spaces are limited.
The four afternoons follow a thematic approach. Details of the aims of each afternoon are provided below:

To celebrate the achievements of British thinking

To challenge stereotypes associated with STEM subjects
Discovery Afternoon 3
Diversity and Culture
To appreciate the diversity that exists within the local area in terms of religion, disability, socio-economic status, sexual orientation and gender identity
To celebrate local culture and cultures around the world
Discovery Afternoon 4
Community
To understand what being part of a community means
To understand the rights and responsibilities of community membership
To explore the different communities that exist in the world
